Cork Speleological Group: Exploring and Protecting Cork’s Underground Heritage
Cork Speleological Group (CSG) is a volunteer-led caving club active in Cork since 1968. We are involved in cave exploration, training, conservation, surveying, responsible access, and public engagement, helping to protect and promote one of Cork’s most overlooked natural and heritage environments — its caves.
One of the most important local heritage connections for the club is Castlepook Cave, which has produced significant cave finds of archaeological, palaeontological and natural heritage interest. These finds help tell the story of Cork’s deep past and show why caves are not just places of exploration, but important records of landscape, wildlife, climate and human history. The work connected with Castlepook has the potential to become a major heritage story for Cork, and CSG is keen to support responsible awareness, research and protection of sites like this.
We are also looking to welcome new members. You do not need to be an experienced caver to get involved. We are interested in hearing from people who want to try caving safely, learn about cave conservation, support surveying and recording, help with club activities, or contribute skills in photography, mapping, heritage, biodiversity, fundraising, events, or community outreach.
As members of the Cork City Public Participation Network, we are keen to build stronger links with local communities, environmental groups, heritage organisations, schools, landowners, researchers, and potential supporters. We are currently looking for support with public awareness, conservation projects, equipment, training, cave recording, and opportunities to share the story of Cork’s underground heritage with a wider audience.

Cork Biodiversity Hub: One Year Celebration & Mural
Cork Biodiversity Hub in Ballincollig recently celebrated one year in existence, officiated in April by Senator Kelleher. During this busy year the Hub held many public talks on subjects as varied as harbour porpoises, owls, birdsong, solar panels, food growing and seed saving, composting and much more. They have hosted walks in Ballincollig Regional Park and have planted trees and a hedgerow in Balllincollig, with plans to do many more.
The premises has been used by Cork Food Policy Council, Nature Network Ireland and The Environmental Forum for workshops and events. The Hub also provides a base for the Cork branch of Birdwatch Ireland who now hold all their indoor public events there, as do the Cork Rivers Alliance and a local sewing group Sew-Along: Make and Mend which meets monthly and is open to all to join.
Also in April, the Hub unveiled a beautiful ceramic mural at the entrance of the building. The mural is composed of nature-based ceramic pieces made by various individuals, community groups and local schools during the summer of 2025 under the guidance of ceramic artist Julie Forrester. Julie held several workshops between June and August of last year which were open for all to join, and over the following months she assembled the ceramic pieces into a stunning mural which can be viewed and admired by all who pass by the building at Powdermills, Balllincollig, beside the eastern entrance to the Regional Park.

Have you read our Visions yet? What do you think?
Cork City PPN members have been supported to express in 2023-2025 their visions for a more inclusive Cork city, a city that cares for the various aspects of wellbeing for all.
Their diverse and well-informed voices list in very practical ways the policy changes that they imagine will lead to meeting the needs for all who live here now and in the future. It is hoped that these documents will be used by all who resonate with them to lobby for positive change.

Cork City Public Participation Network (PPN) is pleased to present its Annual Report for 2025, a year marked by continued collaboration, active participation, and progress in strengthening our PPN. This report reflects the ongoing work of Cork City PPN in supporting its members and working towards more community voices being represented in local decision-making.
Throughout 2025, Cork City PPN reinforced its commitment to building the capacity of our network and supporting meaningful participation. A key focus was filling our PPN Representative positions, working to get Linkage Groups up and running, and giving opportunities for members to engage with the PPN.
We launched multiple projects in 2025, each of them developed with the goals of increasing understanding of the PPN and also developing the capacity of our membership and those who engage with us. Each of these projects clarifies our communities voice and gives a mandate to all those who represent the PPN.
This report outlines the key activities and achievements of last year, while recognising the ongoing commitment of our members, Representatives, partners, and stakeholders.
